Importance of Buying Organic and Fair Trade Tea and Coffee

January 17th, 2009

By Kaushal Sheth

There exists around the English and their tea drinking, myths. Admittedly people in the UK drink lots and lots of tea, and some, not from the UK, even think it’s a ritual, imagine that! Unfortunately, lots of people from the UK are not aware that the tea they drink is grown in parts of the world by producers who care not for their workers or the environment. Some tea plantations in the developing world, who pay their workers a pittance, use poisons and pesticides that are sprayed directly on the crops and even on the poorly paid workers who tend them.

Fortunately, there are alternatives. Organic and Fairtrade tea, coffee and coca are being offered and they are growing in popularity. The more people learn about the abusive practices of some of the plantation owners the more they are searching for those alternatives, and are willing to pay a few extra pennies for enormous benefits to the health of all and the conditions of workers. Sustainable is a buzz word now and for that reason people are reaching

The Ultimate Volunteer- Where is This Super Hero?

January 16th, 2009

By Kirby Rooks

A volunteer is defined as anyone who enters into or offers himself for service of his own free will. We think of service naturally as a conveyance to a nonprofit organization to help the community or the environment.

A volunteer typically doesn’t get paid but in the case of General Andrew Jackson and his Tennessee Volunteers the General himself paid them personally although he did get reimbursed from Washington. Generally speaking a volunteer does his work because he enjoys helping others and doesn’t think of or expect to be paid. He does so to gratify his passion for a cause.

The act of volunteering comes in many forms such as helping to feed the hungry, serving on the board of directors for a nonprofit organization, coordinating an emergency response team or just plain helping to pick up trash on the side of the road. As you see volunteers do a lot to fill the gaps in service in our communities and as such make themselves invaluable to society.

If volunteers are so well thought of and contribute so much to our

Environmental Reasons For A Flooded Basement

January 15th, 2009

By Samantha Kleiner

American homeowners of houses with basements are advised to take the necessary safety measures for unseen events that may cause a flooded basement. Cleaning up a flooded basement can be very taxing to a homeowner in terms of financial resources, not to mention the anxiety a flooded basement brings.

Knowledge therefore of the possible reasons why flooding in the basement occurs is a crucial first step towards safeguarding our properties against the ill effects of basement flooding.

Since the basement is a structure of the home which is located well below ground level, this predisposes the basement to such environmental threats such as groundwater seeping in through the walls and basement foundations of the home.

In communities where snow is a common fare or heavy rainfall is a part of everyday life, the likelihood of having a flooded basement is higher than those communities without snow or very little rainfall. In these communities, the snowy or rainy environment contributes to the flooding of the basement through the creation of an unstable pressure difference between the inner surfaces of the basement and its

Be Environment Friendly While Doing Water Damage Restoration

January 13th, 2009

By Gretchen Vuvalgee

As we are now living in an enlightened era of environmental health, it is clear that proper water damage restoration is imperative. Water damage restoration should be more than extraction of water from the carpet and pad. Controlling and terminating the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew should be the primary concern. In terms of the interior building temperature, it is important to note that mildew and molds cannot live under the temperature of 75 degrees. Water damage restoration must be performed by trained technicians who understand proper procedures and chemical applications. A responsible water damage restoration service will use an effective mold killer but should be environment friendly as well. Responsible personnel will provide the necessary adjustments to the environment by altering temperature and humidity levels to deter production of mold, mildew and bacteria.

Water-damaged building interiors provide the primary environment for the growth and reproduction of mildew and bacteria. They are parasitic, meaning they rely on dead or decaying organic matter for food. One of the favorite foods for bacteria and mildew is the decaying organic jute backing of carpets which we

Eliminate The Environmental Effects Of Sewage Contamination With A Proper Sewage Damage Cleanup

January 12th, 2009

By Gretchen Vuvalgee

If raw sewage and wastewater contaminates surface water and soil, the results can be devastating. It can affect many areas of human life. This is why sewage damage cleanup of waterways and soil, no matter how costly, has to be given priority. If sewage damage cleanup is not done immediately, sewage damage would cost us our health, the quality of our soil, our groundwater and surface water resources, the biodiversity and health of our ecosystem, and, indirectly, our economy.

Topping the important reasons relevant to sewage damage cleanup is to safeguard public health and life of other living organisms. On the human aspect of the problem, exposure to sewage can cause a wide range of illnesses caused by pathogens, bio-toxins, toxic chemicals, viruses, germs, and bacteria present in sewage waste and wastewater.

High presence of nitrogen and phosphorous, high amount of dissolved solids, and heavy metals from industrial wastes can adversely impact our soil resources. Sewage wastewater may also contain high level of salt. If salt accumulates around the roots of plants, it can affect the growth and health of plants. High sodium
